In Anne Nelson's powerful 2002 play, Joan, a writer, and Nick, a fire department captain, struggle with the daunting prospect of composing eulogies for eight of the men lost in the collapse of the World Trade Center. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city.
Written in just nine days, The Guys opened in New York within months after Sept. 11, and helped a grieving city cope with its loss. Originally starring Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray, The Guys ran for months with a rotating cast of highprofile actors, and was made into an acclaimed film. Although written with this specific tragedy in mind, The Guys has an aura beyond Sept. 11, and speaks to any situation where people deal with human loss and unbelievable devastation by drawing on humor, each other, and the enduring bonds of common humanity. The Guys is based on a true story.
Contains mild adult language; recommended for mature audiences, age 13 and above.
