"Curtain Players Wants You" — A Call to Action!
We are all familiar with the Uncle Sam recruiting poster. The iconic figure became popular during World War I as the U.S. government rallied support among the citizenry: "I want you for the U.S. Army." Curtain Players wants you, too, and on behalf of the leadership team, I hope you will consider this friendly call to action: "I want you for our community theatre."
The Curtain Players Board of Directors this season has embraced a key goal, to strengthen our rank and file. In 47 seasons, many have trod the boards, worked stage crews and behind the scenes, given time and talents to maintain this local arts resource... and enjoyed the camaraderie of those experiences as a "community in theatre."
We invite and encourage you who are part of Curtain Players history to reconnect with the company to promote our mission: To bring together people interested in promoting the educational, cultural, and entertainment value of live theatre through participation in theatre-oriented activities and theatre productions. Of course, we welcome with open arms new friends who share our interest and hobby.
Our keenest and constant human-resource need is for our patron services staff. Lately, it has become a Herculean effort to recruit house managers, ushers, parking lot attendants, and concessionaires. We want to build a large and solid base for our hospitality team. A very important function, patron services is the face of Curtain Players to our customers. To that end, we are discussing plans for easier and more efficient sign-up, for training opportunities to build confidence in the tasks, and for rewarding you beyond the personal fulfillment of being an active part of the Curtain Players family.
In the short term, however, we need you immediately. Please do not assume we have your name and contact information on a list. Contact us through links on this website to volunteer. You need not be a paid member or donor (although we gladly accept the financial support, too).
Curtain Players is an ambitious organization, presenting six productions and a summer playwrights festival, and maintaining a playhouse that needs constant tender loving care. A stage manager workshop is scheduled for November with more special programs in the planning stages, including readings of the three plays that lost their chance for presentation due to cancellation of playwrights festival performances in July.
And there are the administrative and governance functions the 11-member board addresses. These include fundraising campaigns, marketing efforts, and community outreach. We on the board are looking to our Curtain Players friends and family to build a brain trust, to help address myriad matters that involve the continued successful operation of a community theatre that is top shelf.
As Uncle Sam represents the U.S., we should create a character for C.P. — Captain Pete, perhaps? More important than entertaining any flight of fancy as that, I sincerely ask that you consider volunteering today. Curtain Players needs you.
