Curtain Call: Party at Bel-LAGO, Friday January 29
01.14.10—Curtain Players will host a midseason party Friday January 29 at Bel-LAGO, 170 North Sunbury Road, Westerville (with a scenic view of Hoover Reservoir). This social time will begin at 7:30 pm. Appetizers will be provided. There will be a cash bar, with soda and water provided as a courtesy. There is no admission cost and this event is open to everyone, but to prepare, RSVP to Sara Weaver at sarabelleweaver@gmail.com. Guests are reminded to make their $12 membership commitment at this time if they have not already. The membership gift allows you voting privileges at the annual election in May and puts you at the top of the list to be contacted for volunteer opportunities. The Bel-LAGO (www.bellagobistro.com) is a full-service restaurant so if anyone wants to eat dinner there, they are more than welcome, but this will be at their own cost. There is no formal program for this affair, but there will be remarks at 8 o'clock from Jim Petsche, president of the Curtain Players Board of Directors. Those who call ourselves Curtain Players — be they actors, directors, creative team members, volunteers, audience members, veterans, new and interested parties — need an opportunity to gather as a "community in theatre," and to learn as a group what Curtain Players is doing and how they can play a greater part in those programs. Sara Weaver and Courtney Lingnofski are co-chairs for the January 29 event.
Playwrights Festival Committee Sorts Through Submissions
01.14.10—Committee members are sorting and reading through more than 160 scripts submitted for The Curtain Players 2010 Playwrights Festival. Producer Michael Day advertised widely for submissions, and received scripts from as far away as Prince Edward Island, Canada, and London, England. Day's panel will consider the submissions to determine which will be included in the festival's three weekend programs July 9-10, 16-17 and 23-24. The readers include Lisa Billing, Dale Bush, Di Felice, April Olt, Kim Sanders, Jason Smith, Amy Talbot, and Joe Taleroski. Day said the committee hopes to make final selections by February 14, then solicit directors by mid-March. Auditions for festival actors are scheduled for April 17-19. This year, the actors will be a company participating in all aspects of the festival during its run, instead of being attached to only one script. More details will be announced as they are made available. The festival is an annual event for Curtain Players.
Curtain Town Hall Meeting February 6 Addresses Building Issues
01.14.10—The Curtain Players Board of Directors, on Saturday, February 6, will lead a town hall meeting to address issues surrounding the current condition of the Harlem Road playhouse. The 1 o'clock meeting, to be conducted at the theatre, is open to all. Participants will be asked to freely brainstorm ideas for potential improvements to the playhouse and the lot on which it is located. The agenda will include a tour of the building. Mark Rasche, the Curtain Players board member in charge of building and grounds, said this first step in developing a master plan not only will address comfort and safety concerns of those using the building and attending performances, but also will enhance the structure's capabilities for theatrical productions and as a social center. More importantly, having a master plan is necessary as Curtain Players addresses zoning issues with Harlem Township that will secure continuance of CP programs. The next step in the process is to prioritize building needs, attach a cost to the projects, and prepare a timetable for execution of the construction and renovation.

Changes to the CP Board; Williams replaces Roberts, Nicastro Steps Down

Marla Williams

01.14.10—The Curtain Players Board of Directors at its January 12 meeting unanimously voted Marla Williams its new vice president. Williams replaces Don Roberts who resigned the office in December.

This is an encore performance for Williams, who served as Curtain Players vice president during the 2008–2009 season. She is a veteran Curtain Player, having served as an actor, director, board member, and volunteer. As vice president, Marla will chair the nominating committee (which will prepare for consideration a slate of board members for the 2010–2011 season) and will lead the committee organizing the season-ending social event in June. Williams was already working on the 2010-2011 program ad sales campaign.

Don Roberts has been a member of the Curtain Players leadership team for two seasons. He was instrumental in securing off site storage for the Players last summer and participated in the August clean-up effort. He directed two productions, The Rainmaker and A Little House Christmas, during his board tenure. Roberts, too, has been active the annual playwrights festivals through the years, most recently acting and directing in the shortened 2009 event.

Ernie Nicastro has resigned from the Curtain Players Board of Trustees. This was Nicastro's first term on the board. Nicastro, who appeared in the Curtain Players production of The Rainmaker in 2008, said he will continue as a volunteer with the company. The Curtain Players Board of Directors will fill this vacancy on the leadership team at its February 9 meeting.

Spiff-Up Day 2009
On Saturday, August 15, a group of fun-loving folks volunteered part of their weekend to help out with the Spiff-Up Day at the theatre. The turnout was great, and a lot was accomplished. The storage shed was completely emptied, and had specific storage areas created for doors, loose timber, and flats. The "steeple area" inside was also completely emptied, and the contents were sorted between "toss", "move back in", and "move to the storage unit". And the steeple exterior was scraped and repainted. If you haven't been out to see the improvements, here are some photos.

Special thanks to the following who so graciously volunteered their time:
