Character Breakdown:

George: Around 30, nervous and not comfortable to begin with. He ages to around 55.
Doris: Needs to play 25 to begin. She is very confident and unashamed. She ages to around 50.

Both actors need to be able to show the age range needed without makeup, since the show spans over 24 years. Each character goes through both physical and emotional changes that need to be conveyed to the audience.

Synopsis
One of the most popular romantic comedies of the century, SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR ran four years on Broadway, was a successful motion picture, and remains one of the most widely produced plays in history. It follows a love affair between George and Doris, who meet by chance at a romantic inn over dinner. Although both are married to others, they find themselves in the same bed the next morning questioning how this could have happened. They develop a relationship in which they rendezvous once a year at a country inn and spend a weekend together. The relationship evolves into emotional intimacy over the course of 24 years, and they become much more than clandestine lovers. Though they only meet once a year, they become important parts of one another's lives. Some mild adult language; Recommended for mature audiences—age 13 and above.
